A Sorta Fairytale

Anyway, Season's Greetings once again, I'll refrain from writing on the political correctness of having holidays in a religion-free world. I haven't changed that much for the past two years:)

Blessings to all, and, on second thoughts, Happy Christmas.

Wasted...Youth

Music Is Best

OSI - Go

On the first day
I set the scene in a magazine
And now I hurt someone
In the next scene
I cracked the code of the episode
And now I'm having fun

In a house
In the mountains
There's a way to fall asleep
And I know when I find it
I will let ...this... go

I can still feel my hope twitch
Crushed by the force of chromosomes
It's a trail map to a bear trap
Separating poor torn camouflage

Under house
Under water
Lay your wing-clipped history
And I know
When I find it
I will let ...this... go

It's A Rich Man's World

How rich are you? >>

I'm loaded.
It's official.
I'm the 842,519,885 richest person on earth!

Courtesy of pro_01.

I'm in the top 15% of the world's richest people, so it turns out I lied to my daughter. I keep telling her that we're average - neither poor, not rich. I remind her of the most unfortunate kids in Bulgaria - the Roma kids who scavenge the waste containers.

All things considered, however, we ARE average. We cannot afford a ski vacation, but we're never hungry, we may struggle to pay the bills in winter, but we buy one book every month and rent a movie twice a week. My kids are clothed, fed, and duly entertained. I take them to an amusement park 2-3 times per year, buy them junk food and sweets as seldom as I can, and fresh fruits as often as I can. True, I experience tremendous guilt every time I walk past a toy store. I can see the glitter in their eyes when they look at the Toys We Will Never Afford. And I ask myself, how much do I owe them? How can I teach them the right attitude to money? How do I teach myself the right attitude to money?

A few days ago I thought: I want to have enough money for a decent burial. No, don't say I listen to too much Finnish music (which I do). It's just common sense. And no, I don't mean my funeral, it's just... anybody's funeral. Calculations here.

Ok, maybe I have listened to an unhealthy dose of The Funeral Album:D

I have been meaning to write a post on money for a long time, but deadlines loom again.

Gently Bleeding

Just a quick update on the latest albums I'm into, for those afraid to check my ethnic (and epic) last.fm page;)

For some quasi-religious progressive metal: Evergrey - The Inner Circle
For some symphonic a.k.a. neo-classical metal: Adagio - Underworld
For some awesome death progressive metal: Dark Suns - Existence (beauty inside).

Tags? Labels? Give me a break. I am so fascinated by the last band (tnx Dred) that I am almost reluctant to listen to their first album, for fear of (death) disappointment. He labeled them 'Anathema meets Opeth', but they are also similar to Riverside, Pain of Salvation, and Green Carnation - all great bands I love. Music is best, anyone?

In other news, apart from a character in one of my favorite movies ever, Broken Sword happens to be a domestic situation. I threw a tantrum at the mess in kids' room, hit the desk with Rada's sword and broke it. My little girl cried for 15 minutes, and my little boy offered her his sword. Then I apologized, once again coming to terms with the theology of pain, anger, and hatred. Their 'function' is to open the door to healing, generosity and forgiveness.

An EICTE moment with a character who has just learned 'everything'.

Out-of-Print, Out of Mind

Green My Kids

Fulfilled

More than once have I said: I want life to the fullest. One pretty original response to that was 'Play MMORPGs', but here's a brief note for future generations, which does not involve GW:)

Life to the fullest. According to Dan Simmons' discussion of Proust, love fails as an attempt to make sense of life, but most people agree that love is indispensable in a life of fulfillment. My friend Elle writes about her view of love here.

Dear Elle,

I can identify with much of what you say. Walking the thin line between hope and despair, I will only add that no, that is not all there is. Love is not only about giving and taking, it's about being and doing. Don't forget, we're living in a world pretending to satisfy all our needs, but it's a fallen world, and we're fallen creatures, striving to live life to the fullest, by having all there is to have. Love just happens to feature prominently in the shopping list.

My current thought is that gaps, losses, and holes in the plane of our being can make a beautiful pattern. Cynicism aside, a few spots of complete and utter fulfillment can make the pattern even more beautiful.

All my love and prayers go with you,

hazel

Truth vs Beauty - The Inner Life of the Cell

This is not some puny science vs religion debate. This is an epitome of transcendence, and yet it is happening even at this very moment. This is the mystery of life, made even more magnificent by the art of the truth-seekers.

Just to live is holy. Just to be is a blessing. (Said Tim Hansel in a book I still quote.)

Enjoy. (I experienced connection problems during first viewing, the second was fine. Don't give up!)

Local Anaesthetic

И да, just another day in paradise. And justice for all, in this local news.

ни то - noдpeждaмe го.

This blog goes comatose.

I guess I need a break from writing here. It's been too long and too much, and sporadic representations of RL and my mind's wanderings seem to have lost their therapeutic (for me) and entertaining (for you) effect.

Oceansize - I Am The Morning

I am not a morning person, and I have never been. Mornings take their toll and damage me. I wake up with a rending sense of ugliness and desire to sleep more. Diagnosis - heavy sleep deprivation, but it's more than that. It's the burdening feeling of inadequacy which has haunted me since the age of six when I first had to wake up at 6 am.

What if I am the morning? If I am *really* the person who I am early in the morning? Oh, the horror...

For a dose of morning-after pills - here. The translation of Eliot is NOT mine, however, it's just a PR move:)

Where Angels Fear To Rant

And sometimes, only very rarely, a secretive feeling creeps in, that this is the moment I was made for, that time collapses exclusively for me, to lift me up and show me infinity, and I understand the words of the poet: 'To see the world in a grain of sand...'

The place where I felt that was at the bedside of my kids. Watching sleep crawl under my son's eyelids, I barely sense the tingling in my bent legs. I sit on the floor next to his little bed, hold his hand (a ritual we introduced to prevent him from sucking his thumb, at least in bed), I look at the darkness, and talk to God. And I suspect He laughs at my plans.

Rada is asleep thirty seconds after I turn off the light, so I don't often watch her. Mihail, however needs reassurance to fall asleep. He sleeps with the mammoth in his bed, but he still wants me there. And he says, time and again: 'Mama, I love you SO much'. (He's been saying that several times a day for the past month, so I know he knows.) 'I love you too, son', I say, and I can't take my eyes off his face. He has an incredible face, whose expression can switch from childish to grownup in milliseconds. Sometimes he says: 'Mama, I let you go work now.' I say 'Thanks' and leave, either to work, or to play Guild Wars. (I haven't played GW for almost a month. Too many coincidences.)

I have nothing to do with my son's existence. I have everything to do with my son's existence. Children are a question mark to the statement of our own lives. They demand a definition of what it is to be human. There is no easy answer.

Today the Church celebrates the day of St Michael the Archangel, who is supposed to be the patron saint of both my kids. (Don't ask why Rada is included in the name list of celebrating folks, I have no clue, except that she has a special brother;) So I bought them a pair of swords. Mihail has been asking for a sword for ages, and was absolutely thrilled, he even said a little prayer of thankfulness in bed. Rada made a wonderful allusion to 'Finding Nemo':

'I love fighting with a sword. It runs in my family.'

How could I miss an EICTE moment?

"In art St. Michael is represented as an angelic warrior, fully armed with helmet, sword, and shield (often the shield bears the Latin inscription: Quis ut Deus)"
_ _
On a completely unrelated note, today is the day I learned something which made me remember the words of a wise man: Fate is a canine. Once again, more slowly. Fate. Is. A. Canine.

Without Serendipity

I ran into a blog whose description I loved and it's applicable to my blog, too.

You must be really bored to come here.

No shit.

In case you don't know what serendipity is:
  1. The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.
  2. The fact or occurrence of such discoveries.
  3. An instance of making such a discovery.
Word History: We are indebted to the English author Horace Walpole for the word serendipity, which he coined in one of the 3,000 or more letters on which his literary reputation primarily rests. In a letter of January 28, 1754, Walpole says that “this discovery, indeed, is almost of that kind which I call Serendipity, a very expressive word.” Walpole formed the word on an old name for Sri Lanka, Serendip. He explained that this name was part of the title of “a silly fairy tale, called The Three Princes of Serendip: as their highnesses traveled, they were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of....”
I've made a discovery, by accident and sagacity (this word has the same root as the word sage in my blog description). I found I could be serendipitously, insanely, unbelievably happy by just opening a door and seeing what's behind it. My capacity for happiness has been latent for much too long, I guess, and now it's unleashed. Like fury:)

In other news, kids have recovered from chicken pox.

In yet other news, I have tons of work, professional drawbacks and criticism, overlapping deadlines, blatant failure to get drunk on rum, a new Blessed Light Monk/Assassin waiting to practice on Random Arenas, and a half-full (or half-empty, whatever) bottle of baby oil, waiting to be immortalized in verse or prose. Watch this space:D

The title of this post is taken from a song I love. Love is not music.

My God Is Bigger Than That

A long and winding article on why New Atheism, as voiced by Richard Dawkins (mentioned also in this post), is a fundamentalist, and ultimately limiting worldview.

"...the big war is not between evolution and creationism, but between naturalism and supernaturalism. The sensible" -- and here he pauses to indicate that sensible should be in quotes -- "the 'sensible' religious people are really on the side of the fundamentalists, because they believe in supernaturalism. That puts me on the other side."

More: "Highly intelligent people are mostly atheists," he says.

I can't even bother to comment. The article touches on the possibility of religion of reason (been there, done that, French revolution, anyone?), but then cringes in the face of incompatibility of reason and emotions. In the final analysis, it asks 'What is true?'. But then the very concept of truth is an ultimate statement, and in the 21st century we speak of truths and multiple interpretations. Is this enough? Personally, I think that as long as we search for truth, we (consciously or not) search for God.

Nicotine Tension Experiment

My name is Hazel and I'm a nicotine addict.

Yesterday I conducted an experiment in masochistic behavior: 24 hours without smoking. I had all the symptoms of abstinence - crankiness, anxiety, temper flares, tearfulness, inability to concentrate, etc. I was planning to post a log of my rising dissatisfaction with the world during the day, but I didn't have internet yesterday either, so lucky you:D Double abstinence trains the will like few other tribulations. Music like A Perfect Circle, Pain of Salvation, and Metallica did help to alleviate the pain a bit.

No, seriously, I was appalled at the gap in me left by removal of addictive substances. It was like a black-tentacled monster scratching and eating me from the inside. It is not a coincidence that Ffox compares my religious beliefs with cigarettes (two highly obnoxious habits in her view;). They are both defining behaviors, there's no getting away with this. I was less myself, incomplete without smoking, and I resented that dependency. And loved it, too. ^_^

Speaking of incompleteness, at the end of the day, aren't we all beta versions of ourselves?

I bought a new perfume to celebrate my decision to try to quit smoking, next weekend.

Early Nineties Revisited

A poem to be read
not from the most obvious beginning
because
the poet
missed the pain.

Did you ever,
ever dream
that I'm the one?
Did you ever see
that you're the man
whose fingerprints
match mine
to form a picture
which is 'very good'?

You are the one
who dreams, like Daniel,
of things to come.
(And I can never
hope to reach them
with my heap of words.)
You are the one
who laughs as if
the origins of Earth
were 'very good'.
(And I can only hope
to try to smile.)
You are the one
who prays for music
and loves the longest cuts.
(And I'm so in a hurry
to arrive sooner
at the Place of Silence.)
You add fervour
and radiance
where I
fail to notice
the faintest glow
in This World.

Leper Madonna

Mihail has varicella, aka chicken pox.

a disease, commonly of children, caused by the varicella zoster virus and characterized by mild headache and fever, malaise, and eruption of blisters on the skin and mucous membranes.

He's still cute, though, but this caused major disruption of routine and plans.

Anyway, Beatallica rule:

LEPER MADONNA

Leper Madonna-spineless from the start
Like a Virgin comez to town, you're sucked into the part
Living by your story, spreading your diseaze
Suffah for your glory, falling to your kneez

Friday nite-a brazier in your suitcase
Like a Prayer-death creeping like a nun
Monday-blind devotion came with black lace
Seeee O-ri-on

Leper Madonna-Jaymz iz at your breast
He don't give a fuck-a how you feed the rest

Leper Madonna-Jaymz iz in your bed
Listen to Beatallica raging in your head

Tuesday-you are taken by the glamour
Wednesday-see the sheep are set to come
Thursday-you're a stinking drunk with power
Seeee O-ri-on

Leper Madonna-Heaven you will meet
Make a contribution, get a bettah seat.

In other news, I find I can modify reality by thinking a thought. It is frightening, like the poets say. And no, I don't have delusional grandeur disorder, it just happens now and then.

Be careful what you wish for:)

Placebo Effect

I have been drinking decaffeinated coffee at home for the last few days. The effect is indistinguishable from the effect of ordinary instant coffee.

It's all in the mind.

Listening to Paradise Lost's album 'Symbol of Life' I couldn't help thinking that the best song is 'Xavier'. I knew it sounded familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it. Of course, the original is from 'Within the Realm of a Dying Sun' - the first Dead Can Dance album I ever heard (still have the cassette). Secondhand songs here, for those who keep wondering.

What is the difference between different types of sameness, the sage asked. It turns out I am addicted to the taste of coffee, not to caffeine. And yes, sometimes cover songs are better than the originals.

Sheep is Free, BMW Isn't

My son this morning:

'Mom, when your car breaks down, I want your next car to be BMW.' He's still 42 months old, but already knows.

You either have it, or you don't. Instead of a BMW, I'd rather have the wanderlust you can find here. My new addition to the elite club of Fellow Humans features jazz, cyberpunk, admin stuff, and the best license agreement I've ever read. He's also the translator of this poem. I can tell a poet, a prophet, and a visionary when I see one.

And a lovely quote from his random quote section.

Music Fantasies Revisited

It's been almost a year of waiting, and it finally happened!

I wanted to see Balkandji live, and I didn't have the time, the mood, thе company, etc. Last night however I went to see them... hold your breath... with two total strangers. It was a great concert, great company, I am thankful once again.

The good things come to those who wait. This is true of one of my favorite albums of all time, which I had on a cassette tape long ago, in another life:

Extreme - III Sides to Every Story (1992).

Quote from the above article:

In spite of being considered by the band to be their finest work, III Sides To Every Story
was a commercial failure, since it did not feature a hit single such as "More Than Words", from its predecessor Pornograffitti. Also, the particular brand of hard rock that Extreme was known for was falling out of flavor with the rise of the grunge movement around that time.

Lube. It's Official.

I'm in love. For a die-hard music addict like me, it's hard to touch me afresh. This Russian band did it.

(video here)

Mors Illi Ultra Non Dominabitur

And death shall have no dominion.
Dead men naked they shall be one
With the man in the wind and the west moon;
When their bones are picked clean and the clean bones gone,
They shall have stars at elbow and foot;
Though they go mad they shall be sane,
Though they sink through the sea they shall rise again;
Though lovers be lost love shall not;
And death shall have no dominion.
And death shall have no dominion.
Under the windings of the sea
They lying long shall not die windily;
Twisting on racks when sinews give way,
Strapped to a wheel, yet they shall not break;
Faith in their hands shall snap in two,
And the unicorn evils run them through;
Split all ends up they shan't crack;
And death shall have no dominion.
And death shall have no dominion.
No more may gulls cry at their ears
Or waves break loud on the seashores;
Where blew a flower may a flower no more
Lift its head to the blows of the rain;
Though they be mad and dead as nails,
Heads of the characters hammer through daisies;
Break in the sun till the sun breaks down,
And death shall have no dominion.

Whirling Dervishes

I have been reading the 13th century Sufi poet Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, known simply as Rumi. The first word means 'lord', and Rumi is a signifier of origin.

Come to the orchard in spring
There is light and wine
And sweethearts
In the pomegranate flowers

If you do not come
These do not matter
If you do come
These do not matter

***
I have lived on the lip of insanity
Wanting to know reasons
Knocking on a door, it opens
I have been knocking from the inside!

***

The minute I'm disappointed
I feel encouraged.
When I'm ruined
I'm healed.
When I'm quiet
and solid as the ground
Then I talk
the low tones of thunder
for everyone

***

A Time for Madness

Once more,
Love is pouring down my ceiling
and my walls.
Once more, it's the night of the full moon,
it is time for madness.
All my immense knowledge
cannot help me now.
Once more,

Insomnia took my patience.
Rain washed away my intellect.
The Lover made me lose my profession.
What good is my work anyway?

Once more, rise, rise, rise,

Like the way a garden burns
in a hundred shades of orange in the fall,
a Lover's heart shrivels for a sense of the Beloved's touch.
Now the face of that charred garden
is my field of flowers.

Look, two hundred Jupiters
are dancing around my moon.

My Love business is booming,
but don't credit the consultants.
I am done with the consultants
and the pundits,
they call you Jafar the imposter.
Little do they know,
that you are my Shams the Flyer.

Some more love poetry here, better verses - here. I guess it depends on the translator;)

He was a mystic, a theologian, a poet, and a lover. In his lifetime, Rumi was inspired by another dervish, Shams Tabriz-i, who was his mentor, friend, and allegedly lover. Shams disappeared mysteriously after spending several years with Rumi. Suffering in bereavement, Rumi attributed many of his works to him, expressing his love and sorrow.

Rumi is best known as the founder of the Whirling Dervishes, or Mevlevi Order who worship God in the form of song and dance ceremony called sema. An annual festival is held each December in Konya, Turkey, in commemoration of this saint-like figure whose dying day is celebrated as his 'wedding' to God. They are open to other religions and are a very tolerant denomination of Islam:

Whoever you may be, come
Even though you may be
An infidel, a pagan, or a fire-worshipper, come
Our brotherhood is not one of despair
Though you have broken
Your vows of repentance a hundred times, come.

And because everything is connected to everything, here's my dervish from the latest Guild Wars event.

If I get Nightfall, I strongly suspect my character's name will be Shams Tabrizi:)

Separately Wasted

Green is cool, yellow is problematic.

Personal

For the cold pale woman
I leave some of my goodness
I leave the veil of sin
And let go my dreams

Eternity follows me everywhere
Your words so hollow won't go anywhere
Distant shadow disappears
It searches the gate beyond the stars

And there I can see her again

Tell me why you have to be so pure and wrong
And I'm alive to be here

Is it just an omen
Is it me walking blindly
I will find the answer
When I wake up from my dream

And there I can kill her again

I'm Loving Angels Instead

Rainer Maria Rilke wrote in German, and I have no clue of German, so here it goes, courtesy of stuffedman.

Edit: I found this version of the translation, without credit. My guess is that it is Ventsislav Konstantinov.

ни то - noдpeждaмe го.

Time Will Tell?

Sad but true."

Thief In Da House

И от интернет доставчика снощи ми се обадиха пак, да проверят дали съм изпълнила указанията;) Мakes you think, but I will not!:) Down with paranoia:D

John Williams - Imperial Attack.

It's No Joke

The Beatles - I'm So Tired

I'm so tired, I haven't slept a wink
I'm so tired, my mind is on the blink
I wonder should I get up and fix myself a drink
No,no,no.

I'm so tired I don't know what to do
I'm so tired my mind is set on you
I wonder should I call you but I know what you'd do

You'd say I'm putting you on
But it's no joke, it's doing me harm
You know I can't sleep, I can't stop my brain
You know it's three weeks, I'm going insane
You know I'd give you everything I've got
for a little peace of mind

I'm so tired, I'm feeling so upset
Although I'm so tired I'll have another cigarette
And curse Sir Walter Raleigh
He was such a stupid get

You'd say I'm putting you on
But it's no joke, it's doing me harm
You know I can't sleep, I can't stop my brain
You know it's three weeks, I'm going insane
You know I'd give you everything I've got
For a little peace of mind
I'd give you everything I've got
For a little peace of mind
I'd give you everything I've got
For a little peace of mind

Brown-Eyed Baby, Anyone?

While checking Firefox's starred items (I'm too lazy to get rss feeds), I found another example of EICTE (everything is connected to everything), feeding my holistic conviction.

The article is about the slippery slope of PGD practice. PGD stands for preimplantation genetic diagnosis The practice involves biopsy of an embryo from in-vitro fertilization, at different stages of development, often on the third day after fertilization. One cell is removed and tested for genetic diseases, and other criteria. If the embryo 'passes the test', it's implanted and results in a baby (hopefully, as many in-vitro pregnancies are unsuccessful), if not, the embryos face a dire fate.

The procedure leads to a healthier individual, and often is life-saving for a sibling with certain diseases. The older sibling is treated with blood cells from the umbilical cord of the new baby. The tested cell can also be used to establish a stem cell line, which some feel is less objectionable stem cell generation method, than using embryos. This cell would be discarded, if it is unused.

The ethical implication of this technique involves the possibility of parents to request screening for all kinds of 'undesirable' characteristics of their future children. In the documentary I saw, there was a deaf couple who used PGD to discard a *hearing* baby because they wanted a deaf one. Sex selection for 'family balancing' reasons is becoming more and more common.

Which leads us again to the question: do we OWN our children? What are we allowed to do to the ball of tissue they are before they become humans? Of course, many claim that they ARE humans from conception on. I don't know - the potential for humanity is there, for sure. However, investment in this kind of research is so expensive, that this type of screening will be introduced soon for whoever can afford it. We all want perfect children, and if we cannot give them perfection the 'natural' way (ahem), we resort to heavy intervention, to ensure they are disease-free and the right sex now; intelligent, blue-eyed, and musically gifted soon enough.

Personally, I'd go for brown-eyed, for a change;)

Team Building With Ramen 2

Things need not have happened to be true.
Tales and dreams are the shadow-truths that will endure
when mere facts are dust and ashes, and forgot.

Neil Gaiman

Things may happen that overshadow dreams. My team building experience of this weekend took place in the mountains, there was a river and a swimming pool, a slopy lawn, strewn with apple trees, and friendly aliens. Ok, strangers. I didn't shoot anyone, and I wasn't afraid, except in the beginning.

I didn't get lost on the way there, but I managed to do it on the way back, I made a wrong turn at a bridge that looked vaguely familiar, and I didn't read the sign properly. Complete unfamiliarity works better for me:) Anyway, it's nice to have an old lady to ask the way when you get lost, like in a proper quest.

Incredible as it may sound, I had a truly magnificent time with a group of total strangers who called me by a strange name (the one on my ID card). We went for a walk in the forest, we listened to SOAD and similar stuff, we played games until 3:30 am, we had a mindboggling amount of food and drink, we just sat and relaxed and talked, and smoked (!).

I had learned my lesson, and I adjusted to them. I did not fit in perfectly, but was damn close to perfection.

As navigo said,

Un-freaking-believable

Forty Two

In Other News

it's like the time i lost my body
and then i saw it on t.v.
somehow it shed a whole dimension
but it still looked like me
(hey! that looks like me!)

I haven't gotten to the state of 'body' on the screenshots, but I will, shortly. It took this warrior almost ten minutes to kill me:D I liked his axe, though:) Also, Frost commended me on my improved movement!

Background: when your guild plays against a top 100 guild in the GW ladder, the match is shown on 'television', that is, it can be observed by other players in the game in the so called 'observer mode'. The match is shown with 15 minutes delay to avoid abuse. There is a special observer channel, often full of hate spam, sometimes interspersed with sane advice.

In other news, I went to a live Guild Wars event, as part of the audience. I had a lot of fun trying to figure out who is who on the star team, having watched them in observer mode:) I copy the press release from the ESL site, correcting some of the typos.

The Bulgarians [BG] 2-1 Small Gods [SmG]

In yet other news, Meteor Shower ftw and Corley for president:)

To Fake Or Not To Fake

Apparently, the feminist writer Fay Weldon waves the white flag in her latest (not yet published) book 'What Makes Women Happy'.

“If you are happy and generous-minded, you will fake it and then leap out of bed and pour him champagne, telling him, ‘You are so clever’ or however you express enthusiasm.”

“Faking is kind to male partners . . . Otherwise they too may become anxious and so less able to perform. Do yourself and him a favour, sister: fake it.” She adds: “Eighty per cent of women only sometimes — or never — experience orgasm. Facts are facts and there we are. Deal with it.”

Her statistics might or might not be faulty, but it sure is staggering. The writer is not a very reliable source of information though, as this critical article in Sunday Times suggests. Moreover, she is 74 now and has had two divorces. Damn statistics, here's a quote from the article that rings true:

"...we go through the motions anyway and men feel delighted that we are a paragon of good housewifery, a “natural mother”, a multitasking genius, a marvel.

It feels very nice. But it doesn’t necessarily come as naturally as men seem to think it does: there is pretence involved.

We have to sit at work pretending we’re not missing the children, or we have to sit with the children pretending we’re not missing work. We have to pretend that we are naturally exfoliated, buffed, highlighted, tweezed, plucked and veneered. We have to pretend that everything is pretty much effortless and that we are Superwoman."

Rime Of The Ancient Mariner

I can easily believe, that there are more invisible than visible Beings in the universe. But who shall describe for us their families? and their ranks and relationships and distinguishing features and functions? What they do? where they live? The human mind has always circled around a knowledge of these things, never attaining it. I do not doubt, however, that it is sometimes beneficial to contemplate, in thought, as in a Picture, the image of a greater and better world; lest the intellect, habituated to the trivia of daily life, may contract itself too much, and wholly sink into trifles. But at the same time we must be vigilant for truth, and maintain proportion, that we may distinguish certain from uncertain, day from night.
-- T. Burnet, Archaeol. Phil. p. 68 (1692)

Facile credo - these are the first words of the motto to 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Now, it talks about belief in supernatural beings, but I'm going to talk mostly about beliefs in natural phenomena. Some things are easier to believe than others, and I cannot bring myself to believe in some of the hypotheses, for example, on the origins of water on planet Earth.

Generally, I think we are unclear about the scope of the known and knowable. Science purports to describe the visible beings in the universe, and the modern man (not necessarily male;) firmly believes in science and scientific discoveries. However, when talking about ancient events, like 1 billion years ago, we have to acknowledge certain limits of accessibility to our knowledge. We don't know and we might never do, no matter how science progresses, much more than we now know about the Rodinia supercontinent, for example. Mapping out a supercontinent is as much a play of imagination as anything else.

Imagination also plays an important role in the above mentioned hypotheses on the origins of water. Liquid water is found only on Earth, although in other form it has been found elsewhere in the Solar system and interstellar clouds. The origins of water are traced back to the origins of the universe.

Here are the hypotheses listed in Wikipedia:
  1. The cooling of hot gases were released causing "outgassing", potentially bringing water to Earth.
  2. Comets, trans-Neptunian objects or water-rich asteroids (protoplanets) from the outer reaches of the asteroid belt colliding with a pre-historic Earth may have brought water to the world's oceans.
  3. Liquid may have been "locked" in the Earth's rocks and leaked out over millions of years.
  4. Photolysis. (Radiation can break down chemical bonds separating liquid from hard mass)
  5. Rain and sandstorms may have pooled.
I like the 'may have been' modality here, signifying 'we don't know but we'd like to know'. A few words on each hypotesis:

1. Outgassing is producing gases from solids and is not the same as producing liquid water. It is the quantity of water that is puzzling here.
2. My favorite: the panaqua theory - asteroids bringing water to Earth, therefore life! It looks very much like putting all your eggs in one basket, though. And there are different claims as to the correspondence of isotopes found on comets with those in oceanic water.
3. May have. However, evidence suggests that water was present on Earth pretty early after its formation. Several hundred millions of years early, that is. This is pretty short time, considering that the age of Earth is now calculated at 4.5 billion years.
4. Photolysis - probably, the effect on light on chemicals. But again, there had to be MANY chemicals. And oxygen. What is the main source of oxygen - algae, and plants in general.^_^
5. Rain, wtf? I thought the formation of oceans preceded the formation of athmosphere, at least oxygen-rich atmosphere. Anyway, the whole water cycle is full of mysteries.

This post is getting ridiculously long, and I haven't said anything about the most recent experiments on producing life. This is because my point is that the Supernatural Man (TM) asks questions about life, the universe, and everything (water as part of everything), but at the same time makes myths, writes poetry, sings, loves, plays, translates (o rly), paints, and reads. And refuses to sink into trifles, habituated to the trivia of daily life.

Off to cook my pork stew with rice.

Unlikely?

Hell Breaking Loose

Haiku-edit:)

kids jumping on beds
often goes smoothly enough
this time hell broke loose

The fragile balance of life can be upset by the smallest thing, when it's, er, fragile. This bed was supposed to last for another three years. The plan was to design two separate rooms for kids when M. starts school and R. enters puberty. Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans:)

Anyway, Third Kid Plan is now officially cancelled.

Team Building With Ramen

I had an extraodinary dream about aliens.

Their space base on Earth looked like a hotel in the mountain where we got by bus(!). I even had my son with me. All the earthlings knew in advance they were participating in a volunteer experiment, and were provided with the test documentation, so we were aware we were being assessed. The overall objective was to test the level of compatibility of humanity with the alien race, and quite possibly, vice versa.

The hotel was something between 2 and 3 stars (stars are supposed to be huge balls of hot gas, not a measure of luxury:D). The aliens looked like humanoids at first glance, although some had wierd hairstyles (ok, some humans did too), and mingled with us in the lounge areas. We had our rooms but we were instructed not to spend much time there. There was a lake outside the hotel where we could swim and where my son almost drowned while playing with alien kids. There was a lawn of my favorite kind - not completely flat but slightly slopy. Food was served all the time, and sweets were a key ingredient in the menu. I vaguely remember that when you met an alien for the first time, you had to exchange sweets, so I had brought quite a lot. Some sweets remained at the end of the dream...

Which brings me to the confession that I was a grand failure in the experiment. I was so inadequate in communicating with aliens that it reminded me of a painful experience when I was about 11 and went to a folk dancers training camp where I couldn't talk to anyone (a piece of shameful account of my life, yep). Earthlings were almost as much an obstacle for me as aliens and I remember a few blunders of mistaken identity, which is a sign of absolute idiocy, because, you see, aliens gave you the creeps. Literally. When you looked an alien in the eye, there was a palpable tingling sensation in your backbone. They weren't horrific, they were just different. They laughed at different things, they talked about irrelevant (for me) stuff, and they exuded cruelty. I don't know why I thought them cruel, maybe this is my post-dream imagination playing tricks on me.

The dream ended abruptly while I was packing my bag to go. I knew I missed the bus which most other humans had already boarded. The team building was a flop, at least as far as I am concerned. I was so absorbed with myself and my reflections that I didn't even look at people, I refused to adjust my behavior to match theirs (or at least match the test criteria), and I expected them to adjust to me. After all, for them I am the alien, right?

This is my fear of strangers speaking, for those tempted to quote Freud;)

A Beautiful Lie

This is the title of the second album of my freshly-discovered fave band: 30 Seconds To Mars (Streaming sample)

Prog metal, space rock, nu metal, alternative: call it any names, it still rocks! I heard it on the last.fm radio and it was love at first note.

They are worth noting here on the EICTE (everything is connected to everything) principle. Jared Leto, mentioned in this ancient blogpost, vocals and guitar, is a founder of the band. It's official now: I have a wierd taste in men. Might as well see Lord of War to finalize the verdict. Yes... I used to fancy Nicolas Cage, too. End of confessing mode.

I have not forgotten the book posts I promised. Soon.

The Last (Planet) Shall be First

Here Mordred raised the issue of believing in Evolution, focusing on the gap between yes and no, and seeing it as negative. On the other hand, my view is that, as in tests, there should be an answer like 'Not enough information available', and this is not the same as 'I don't care'. I have more than once stressed the amount of faith necessary to assume that Evolution is a fact. Even more often I have stressed my objection to waving facts as arguments because facts, like opinions, are constructions. And that's ok with me.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out that I wrote about the IAU Conference before everyone else:P Hooray for the new construction;)

Get Them Up Against The Wall І

Back in the USSR*

*as in Ur Sweet Sweet Residence

There's no place like home. Back from a book-reading, beach-raiding, kid-raving vacation. I'm going to write short reviews (beware, Alvin, competition's gonna eat you:P) of the following books ( in Bulgarian).

Watch this space:)

Until The Sky Falls Down On Me

Back from Smolian. I'm in love with a mountain. Ain't I a pervert:)

I had a big grin on my face the moment I set foot in Plovdiv. It did not vanish during the 'hard drive' on an old Chavdar bus along the narrow and winding road to one of my favorite cities ever. Last time I went there, four years ago, I was a different person, and my stay there made me so intensely happy, that I lived.

This time the mountain gave me so much joy, again, that I felt more alive than I had for ages. The skyline sparkled with almost uncreated light, the rocks resembled magical castles (in my daughter's words), the lakes had a deep green glow - every breath there pierced me to the core. The whole valley holds me captive, but most of all - one particular spot where we camped last time, and where I took the rest of the gang to share some of the wonder I felt. Whether they felt something akin to my emotion is irrelevant. What mattered was the feeling, while I stood above the lake, on a mossy clearing among the pine trees, of a profound union between me and this place. I fit there. Something there opens a crack in me and the light pours in. At times like this I know I'm created, and I'm thankful. At times like this I unravel mysteries and see visions. I can't share them, though:) Not this side of heaven.

Speaking of er...heaven, there's a construction site close to my paradise lake. By the end of 2008, a hotel complex will rise there, called Dream Lake. Somehow these dreams won't touch my life, I'm afraid. There's sharing and sharing.

I will probably edit this post when I go back to Sofia, and will post pictures from my trip, just to prove that you don't see what I see when you see what I see:) This is a decent answer to the question why there's more than one soul.

The promised picture.

Kairos

Kairos is an ancient Greek word meaning 'the right moment', or 'the opportune'.

"The two meanings of the word apparently come from two different sources. In archery, it refers to an opening, or "opportunity" or, more precisely, a long tunnel-like aperture through which the archer's arrow has to pass. Successful passage of a kairos requires, therefore, that the archer's arrow be fired not only accurately but with enough power for it to penetrate. The second meaning of kairos traces to the art of weaving. There it is "the critical time" when the weaver must draw the yarn trough a gap that momentarily opens in the warp of the cloth being woven."

Kairos

In rhetoric, for example for Aristotle, it is the time and space context in which proof will be delivered. The other elements of context are 'the audience', the attitude of those who will receive the proof, and 'to prepon', the style in which the proof is clothed. Kairos is the goal of effective communication with the audience, taking advantage of changing circumstances.

To my audience:

The tracker reports a daily average of 25-30 visitors. I have always valued quality above quantity and I appreciate your loyalty to this piece of communication with the universe. Even when I don't receive feedback, I know you're there. Thanks. I had prepared a speech for my birthday party but the context did not permit giving it, so here it is:

When we're born, we're small and helpless and we need others. When we're dying, we're small and helpless, and need others. But the secret is: we need others between those two moments, too.

This is the last post for some time as I'm going to my hometown to study the ascetic practice of internet-free life. This is a critical time:) Circumstances change and we must adapt. A gap opens momentarily in the cloth of time, and beauty, truth, and love pour in. I don't know if my arrow has enough power but I will give a definition of falling in love in the strongest language available to me. This is the moment of the amazing transition from 'I want to f**k your brains out' to 'I just want to hold you'. Call it love.

And not to forget, in theology kairos is 'the appointed time in the purpose of God'.
